In 1978, at the age of 15 Jeff was fortunate to be accepted into the "John Heine Apprenticeship Scheme". With this acceptance Jeff would learn a trade and become a "Fitter & Turner". This opportunity meant that Jeff would learn his trade whilst surrounded by the most talented tradesmen in Australia at the time. John Heine's factory was originally located at the corner of Allen Street & Francis Street, Leichhardt. In 1978 an apprentice earnt approximately $36 per week.

Jeff thrived at John Heine's and was selected to partake in many learning opportunities throughout his apprenticeship. Jeff worked in the Tool Room, the Machine Shop and the Fitting Shop. Jeff learnt Blacksmithing, Heat Treating and CNC Machining. Jeff completed his apprenticeship in 1982 and continued to work for John Heine's, working to manufacture parts & machinery, as well as on road servicing until 2002.

In 2002, at 39 years of age, Jeff left John Heine's after 24 years of dedication and service. In August 2002, J Sinclair Engineering Pty Ltd was incorporated. Originally located in Arndell Park then relocating to a larger workspace in Mount Druitt, in 2007. In 2017, J Sinclair Engineering acquired the rights to the "John Heine" patents, drawings, designs and documentation. Ensuring that the knowledge, tradition and legacy of John Heine's and Jeff's talented mentor's lives on.
